摘要: Nitrous oxide (N O), a potent greenhousegas, is emitted during nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment, significantlycontributing to greenhouse effect. Nitrogen removal generally involvesnitrification and denitrification catalyzed by specific enzymes. N O production and consumption vary considerably in responseto specific enzyme-catalyzed nitrogen imbalances, but the mechanismsare not yet completely understood. Studying the regulation of relatedenzymes’ activity is essential to minimize N O emissions during wastewater treatment. This paper aims to reviewthe poorly understood related enzymes that most commonly involvedin producing and consuming N O in terms oftheir nature, structure and catalytic mechanisms. The pathways ofN O emission during wastewater treatment arebriefly introduced. The key environmental factors influencing N O emission through regulatory enzymes are summarizedand the enzyme-based mechanisms are revealed. Several enzyme-basedtechniques for mitigating N O emissions directlyor indirectly are proposed. Finally, areas for further research onN O release during wastewater treatment arediscussed.

Methane, Nitrous Oxide and Ammonia generation in full-scale swine wastewater purification facilities

摘要: The activated sludge process to remove nitrogen and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) is reportedly cost-effective for swine wastewater treatment, and it use has thus increased in pig farming. Nitrous oxide (N O) is generated on farms as an intermediate product in nitrification and denitrification, and methane (CH ) is also generated from organic degradation under anaerobic conditions by microorganisms in manure or wastewater. This study was carried out at five activated sludge treatment facilities across Japan between August 2014 and January 2015. Measurements were conducted over several weeks at wastewater purification facilities for swine farms: two in Chiba prefecture (East Japan), two in Okayama prefecture (West Japan), and one in Saga (Southern Japan). Taking several environmental fluctuations into account, we collected measurement data continuously day and night, during both high-temperature and low-temperature periods. The results indicated that CH and N O emission factors were 0.91% (kgCH · kg volatile solids ) and 2.87% (g N O-N· kg total N ), respectively. Ammonia emissions were negligible in all of the measurements from the wastewater facilities. The N O emission factor calculated under this experiment was low compared to our previous finding (5.0%; g N O-N· kg N ) in a laboratory experiment. In contrast, the CH emission factor calculated herein was rather high compared to the laboratory measurements. There was great variation in daily GHG emission factors measured in the actual wastewater treatment facilities. In particular, the N O emission rate was affected by several environmental conditions at each facility location, as well as by the management of the wastewater treatment.

Relationships of nitrous oxide fluxes with water quality parameters in free water surface constructed

摘要: The effects of chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration in the influent on nitrous oxide (N O) emissions, together with the relationships between N O and water quality parameters in free water surface constructed wetlands, were investigated with laboratory-scale systems. N O emission and purification performance of wastewater were very strongly dependent on COD concentration in the influent, and the total N O emission in the system with middle COD influent concentration was the least. The relationships between N O and the chemical and physical water quality variables were studied by using principal component scores in multiple linear regression analysis to predict N O flux. The multiple linear regression model against principal components indicated that different water parameters affected N O flux with different COD concentrations in the influent, but nitrate nitrogen affected N O flux in all systems.

Mitigating nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural soils by precision management

摘要:

Nitrous oxide (N O) emissions make up a significant part of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. There is an urgent need to identify new approaches to the mitigation of these emissions with emerging technology. In this short review four approaches to precision managements of agricultural systems are described based on examples of work being undertaken in the UK and New Zealand. They offer the opportunity for N O mitigation without any reduction in productivity. These approaches depend upon new sensor technology, modeling and spatial information with which to make management decisions and interventions that can both improve agricultural productivity and environmental protection.

Impact of dissolved oxygen on the production of nitrous oxide in biological aerated filters

摘要: Polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) and microelectrode technology were employed to evaluate the Nitrous oxide (N O) production in biological aerated filters (BAFs) under varied dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations during treating wastewater under laboratory scale. The average yield of gasous N O showed more than 4-fold increase when the DO levels were reduced from 6.0 to 2.0 mg·L , indicating that low DO may drive N O generation. PCR-DGGE results revealed that were dominant and may be responsible for N O emission from the BAFs system. While at a low DO concentration (2.0 mg·L ), might play a role. When DO concentration was the limiting factor (reduced from 6.0 to 2.0 mg·L ) for nitrification, it reduced NO -N oxidation as well as the total nitrification. The data from this study contribute to explain how N O production changes in response to DO concentration, and may be helpful for reduction of N O through regulation of DO levels.

摘要: The effect of additional organic carbon sources on the production of nitrous oxide (N O) in anaerobic-aerobic (low dissolved oxygen) real wastewater treatment system was investigated. In this paper, three laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) (SBR-1, SBR-2 and SBR-3) were operating under an anaerobic-aerobic (low dissolved oxygen, 0.15–0.45 mg·L ) configuration. The SBRs were ‘long-term cultured’ respectively with a single municipal wastewater sample, sodium acetate, and a waste-activated sludge alkaline fermentation liquid as the additional carbon sources of real wastewater. Off-gas analysis showed that N O was emitted into the atmosphere during the aerobic (low dissolved oxygen) period in the three SBRs, and the order of N O emission rate was SBR-2>SBR-1>SBR-3. It was observed that the higher poly-β-hydroxyvalerate fraction of polyhydroxyalkanoates, the lower glycogen transformation and less nitrite accumulation was in SBR-3, while the opposite behavior was observed in SBR-2. Further research indicated that the interaction of the factors above potentially affected the N O emission in the anaerobic-aerobic (low dissolved oxygen) system.

Nitrous oxide formation and emission in selective non-catalytic reduction process

摘要: Pulverized coal-fired boilers are not nitrous oxide sources because of high temperature combustion. But selective non-catalytic reduction may produce NO by NO reduction reactions. Chemical kinetics calculation and experimental research were used to find out the mechanism between NO and N-agent species, N-agent/NO nitrogen stoichiometric ratio (NSR), reaction temperature, reaction time, etc. The results show that NO emission decreases with increasing reaction temperature and NSR decreases when reaction time is enough. NO concentration first increases then decreases as SNCR reactions keep on occuring. Ammonia SNCR tests indicated that NO emission was 0 7 μmol/mol. About 8.7% of NO was transformed to NO, and NO emission was 27.8 μmol/mol at urea-SNCR test. Urea-SNCR is likely to bring NO emission problem.

Short-term effects of excessive anaerobic reaction time on anaerobic metabolism of denitrifying polyphosphate- accumulating organisms linked to phosphorus removal and N

摘要: The short-term effect of anaerobic reaction time (AnRT) (i.e., 90, 120 and 150 min) on the denitrifying phosphorus (P) removal performance and N O production was examined using a denitrifying enhanced biologic phosphorus removal (EBPR) sludge acclimatized with mixed acetate (HAc) and propionate (Pro) (in the molar ratio 3∶1) as carbon sources. The results showed that when the AnRT was prolonged from 90 to 150 min, the anaerobic polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) synthesis was decreased by 15.3%. Moreover, the ineffective PHA consumption occurred in anaerobic phases and contributed to an increased accumulation and higher free nitrous acid (FNA) concentrations (≥0.001–0.0011 mg HNO -N/L) in the subsequent anoxic phases, causing a severe inhibition on anoxic P-uptake and denitrification. Accordingly, the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removal efficiencies dropped by approximately 6.3% and 85.5%, respectively; and the ratio of anoxic N O-N production to TN removal increased by approximately 3.8%. The fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis revealed that the sludge was mainly dominated by (62.0% (SE = 1.5%)). In conclusion, the short-term excessive anaerobic reaction time negatively impacted denitrifying P removal performance and stimulated more N O production, and its effect on P removal was more obvious than that on nitrogen removal.

N2O emission from a sequencing batch reactor for biological N and P removal from wastewater

摘要: Nitrous oxide (N O) is a greenhouse gas that can be released during biological nitrogen removal from wastewater. N O emission from a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal from wastewater was investigated, and the aims were to examine which process, nitrification or denitrification, would contribute more to N O emission and to study the effects of heterotrophic activities on N O emission during nitrification. The results showed that N O emission was mainly attributed to nitrification rather than to denitrification. N O emission during denitrification mainly occurred with stored organic carbon as the electron donor. During nitrification, N O emission was increased with increasing initial ammonium or nitrite concentrations. The ratio of N O emission to the removed ammonium nitrogen (N O-N/NH -N) was 2.5% in the SBR system with high heterotrophic activities, while this ratio was in the range from 0.14% to 1.06% in batch nitrification experiments with limited heterotrophic activities.

Pilot-scale studies of domestic wastewater treatment by typical constructed wetlands and their greenhouse gas emissions

摘要: Three typical constructed wetlands (CWs) including Vertical Flow (VF), Free Water Surface (FWS), and Subsurface Flow (SF), and combined VF-SF-FWS constructed wetlands were investigated for the treatment of domestic wastewater with low C/N ratio. The performance of nutrient removal and the characteristics of greenhouse gas emissions, such as CH and NO, from these CWs were compared. The results indicated that the four types of CWs had high removal efficiencies for organic matter and suspended solid (SS). The combined wetland also showed a comparatively good performance for nitrogen and phosphorus removal, and the removal efficiencies for total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) were 81.3% and 84.5%, respectively. The combined CWs had a comparative lower global warming potential. The FWS CW had the highest tendency to emit CH and led to a higher global warming potential among the four types of CWs, which was about 586 mg CO/m·h.

Cuprous oxide/copper oxide interpenetrated into ordered mesoporous cellulose-based carbon aerogels for

摘要: The casual discharge of dyes from industrial settings has seriously polluted global water systems. Owing to the abundance of biomass resources, preparing photocatalysts for photocatalytic degradation of dyes is significant; however, it still remains challenging. In this work, a cuprous oxide/copper oxide composite was interpenetrated onto carbon nanosheets of cellulose-based flexible carbon aerogels (Cu2O/CuO@CAx) via a simple freeze-drying-calcination method. The introduction of the carbon aerogel effectively prevents the aggregation of the cuprous oxide/copper oxide composite. In addition, Cu2O/CuO@CA0.2 has a larger specific surface area, stronger charge transfer capacity, and lower recombination rate of photogenerated carriers than copper oxide. Moreover, Cu2O/CuO@CA0.2 exhibited high photocatalytic activity in decomposing methylene blue, with a degradation rate reaching up to 99.09% in 60 min. The active oxidation species in the photocatalytic degradation process were systematically investigated by electron spin resonance characterization and poisoning experiments, among which singlet oxygen played a major role. In conclusion, this work provides an effective method for preparing photocatalysts using biomass resources in combination with different metal oxides. It also promotes the development of photocatalytic degradation of dyes.

Mechanical properties and microstructure of multilayer graphene oxide cement mortar

摘要: This study reports on the effects of multilayer graphene oxide (MGO) on compressive strength, flexural strength, and microstructure of cement mortar. The cement mortar was prepared with type P. II. 52.5 Portland cement, standard sand, and MGO. Four mixes were prepared with inclusion of MGO (0%, 0.02%, 0.04%, and 0.06% by weight of cement). The testing result shows that the compressive of GO-cement mortar increased by 4.84%–13.42%, and the flexural strength increased by 4.37%–8.28% at 3 d. GO-cement mortar’s compressive strength and flexural strength at 7 d increased by 3.84%–12.08% and 2.54%–13.43%, respectively. MGO made little contribution to the increases of compressive strength and flexural strength of cement mortar at 28 d. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and nitrogen (N2) adsorption/desorption tests show that the types of hydration products and crystal grain size did not change after adding MGO. Still, it can help to improve the microstructure of the cement mortar via regulating hydration products and can provide more condensed cores to accelerate hydration. Furthermore, the regulating action of MGO for the microstructure of cement mortar at an early age was better than that at 28 d.

Plasma spray coating on interconnector toward promoted solid oxide fuel cells and solid oxide electrolysis

摘要: Interconnector is a critical component to construct solid oxide cells (SOCs) stack. Oxidation of metallic interconnectors and Cr poisoning caused by oxidation are important factors that lead to long-term performance degradation of SOCs. Coating on the interconnector surface is an important approach to inhibit the oxidation and Cr migration of the interconnector. Herein, (La0.75Sr0.25)0.95MnO3–δ (LSM) and Mn1.5Co1.5O4 (MCO) are used to fabricate the coatings of interconnector. Two advanced thermal spray technology, atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) and low-pressure plasma spray (LPPS), are adopted for the coating preparation. The electrochemical performance, rising and cooling cycle stability, and Cr diffusion inhibition performance of the coatings are tested and evaluated. The result indicates that MCO can generate more uniform and denser coatings than LSM. In addition, MCO coatings prepared by LPPS shows the best electrochemical performance, rising and cooling cycle stability, and Cr diffusion inhibition. The initial area specific resistance (ASR) is 0.0027 Ω·cm2 at 800 °C. After 4 cooling cycle tests, the ASR increases to 0.0032 Ω·cm2 but lower than other samples. Meanwhile, the relative intense of Cr at the interface of SUS430 with MCO coatings fabricated by LPPS is lower than that of MCO fabricated by APS after 4 rising and cooling cycle operations, showing more favorable Cr diffusion inhibition performance.
